Why Schools Fail

On KTRS today, I spoke with journalist Ron Berler, who spent a year at Brookside Elementary in Norwalk, Connecticut, one of 45,000 public schools in the US that is failing. He had access to the students, teachers, and administrators, and has compiled his observations into a book, "Raising The Curve." We discussed the impact of No Child Left Behind, how budget cuts are affecting schools, the role of parents, the balance of teaching unprepared students vs. prepared kids, and how teaching-to-the-test has changed classroom curricula (and not for the better).
